Taquería la Michoacana is a vibrant Mexican restaurant located at 1301 S 38th St in Tacoma, WA, and it offers an authentic taste of Mexico that truly resonates with both locals and visitors. From the moment you step inside — or even if you opt for takeout — you’ll experience the essence of traditional Mexican cuisine delivered with warmth and sincerity.
The menu is a treasure trove of classic and beloved dishes. Standouts include the Taco Dorado Plate and Birria De Res, which are praised for their rich, well-seasoned meats and bold, comforting flavors. The Super Burrito is a must-try, reminiscent of the hearty, satisfying Mission-style burritos from San Francisco — stuffed generously with cheese, beans, pico de gallo, and your choice of protein. For seafood lovers, offerings like Camaron a La Diabla and Mojarra Frita bring a vibrant kick of spice and freshness, beautifully complemented by rice, beans, and crisp salads.
The dishes are made with fresh ingredients that shine through every bite, as customers repeatedly note the bright flavors and homemade touches, especially in the three house-made salsas ranging from a smoky, herbaceous verde to a fiery roja that perfectly elevates each dish. Vegetarians will appreciate options like the flavorful cheese and jalapeño tamales or the bean and rice fillings, showing the kitchen’s commitment to diverse tastes and dietary preferences.
Don’t miss the subtle but satisfying sides either — the creamy guacamole, crisp chips & salsa, or the indulgent carne asada fries provide the perfect accompaniment to make your meal complete.
While the restaurant’s dining area is modest and can feel a bit cozy, Taquería la Michoacana’s true strength lies in its authentic flavors and the genuine hospitality of its staff. Many patrons describe the atmosphere as casual and straightforward, much like an inviting neighborhood taquería where the focus centers on the food rather than fancy frills. In fact, for many, it’s the perfect spot for quick and delicious takeout, especially when you’re craving an honest, satisfying Mexican meal without any pretenses.
Customer reviews reinforce this sentiment. Michael Savage praises the fantastic carne asada and tortillas despite average beans and rice, pointing out the reasonable prices and decent portions. Sarah Svenson, who lived in Mexico for nearly three decades, boldly affirms that this is the best Mexican place in Tacoma, highlighting the culture and authenticity behind every dish. Meanwhile, Sy H raves about the fresh ingredients and the spicy, flavor-packed salsas that bring an exciting kick alongside standout vegetarian options.
Taquería la Michoacana excels in delivering a flavorful, authentic dining experience that honors Mexican culinary traditions. Whether you’re in the mood for the comforting richness of a Menudo, the spicy zest of Camaron a La Diabla, or a hearty Pork Burrito, you can expect quality, freshness, and vibrant flavors that leave you feeling nourished and satisfied. It’s a Tacoma gem where genuine Mexican flavors come alive, making it a stop worth prioritizing on your food journey.
For those seeking a genuine taste of Mexico in a no-fuss, friendly environment, Taquería la Michoacana offers a truly worthwhile culinary experience — one that keeps regulars coming back for more.
Burrito, beans, and rice were all pretty average. The carne asada and tortillas were fantastic. Prices were pretty reasonable, and portions were decent. The seating was small, and there wasn't much of it. Seems like an order and take out place rather than a sit down. Anyway, I will be going back for sure, but it's probably only a number two pick.
I lived in Mexico 29 years and this is the best Mexican place in Tacoma. Funny this rating asked for atmosphere and a bunch of other things that just don't apply to this place. It's not about the atmosphere, you can dine in and I have, which is no problem, but the best thing is to get take out and be gone. A lot of times there's a line because everyone knows what a great place this is. Best to call ahead if you know their menu and just pick it up, the food is extraordinary.
Great vegetarian tamale!! Huge $3 Tamales that have cheese/jalapeño flavor or chicken/rice flavor, very worth! The Salsas are super super spicy & salty; I love them! The green herb creamy and smoky-bitter dark red salsa were my favorites. **All ingredients tasted very FRESH Lots of vegetarian possibilities but the cheese-only option isn't posted on the menu so just ask for cheese or bean and rice instead of meat. They also have a good salad topping with sauce, cabbage, &potato for enchiladas and it really makes a fuller dish when ordered. **YES- best flavorful Rice and Beans! (I think Lard is probably used so ask them if you are Vegan) [I'm editing an older review to add a photo]
I stopped in here but didn't have time to grab some food. It's a shame though, because it smelled really good and the people were very polite. I may try it yet when I'm the area.
This is one of my regular spots. I tried the asada and brirria super tacos, pictured below. I recommend the super burrito, it’s very similar to the mission style burrito from San Francisco (If you know, you know). The costumer service was great, the staff was very sweet. They offer three house made salsas, all bomb! Every time I have dined here I have left full, and nourished. The price is more than reasonable. Definitely worth stopping by.
Spicy salsa , quality I came here for my lunch time and I was surprised on the Nachos. Im coming here on my weekends since I live in auburn, for me if the food good and service i dont mind the drive.
Got a taco Supreme, the thick slab of griddled cheese was great. Everything was well-seasoned, including the rice and beans. Delicious loaded asada fries with a tasty presentation too (got the chorizo).
